Home business owners and small business owners of all kinds share many common decisions and issues to resolve. However, home businesses, in some ways, are simpler than 'traditional' businesses because there are often many common business caveats missing from the home based business that traditional businesses and small businesses have to face. When you operate a home based business or internet business, for example, as the business owner you often do not have to deal with such business issues as executing office or retail leases, selection of a business location, insurance for public access, signage, security of employees and office space, and much more. Home businesses also often employ independent contractors who also work at home instead of traditional employees who require much more in the way of benefits, administration, training, tax work and legal management.
But all small business owners, home based and traditional, face many of the same business issues. For example, what form of business entity will their home businesses be... sole proprietorship, corporation, partnership? Nearly all businesses should have business insurance. All businesses share tax woes and responsibility for registering and licensing (where applicable) their businesses.
Operating any small business can be a lot of work but a lot of reward, too. Be sure to consult competent professionals when making important decisions about your home business and its legal issues, such as licensing, insurance and taxes.
